Interview with the Designer:Tarryn Buttery

  • Michele: Hi Tarryn, how long ago did you start "Josephine"?

  • Tarryn : I started "Josephine" about two years ago.My mom named me Josephine after my grandfather who died six months before I was born.

  • Michele: What are you passionate about?

  • Tarryn :Firstly I am passionate about my son and husband. I am also passionate about nature. I love trees and at risk of sounding like a total hippie, I believe we need more of them in our overcrowded concrete world!I love design and anything that alludes to the return of farm life...

  • Michele: A modern art nouveau type movement?

  • Tarryn : Perhaps..as long as it's got raw wood, open paddocks and speckled chickens.

  • Michele: What is your background before "Josephine"

  • Tarryn : I studied fine art and then started working for an import company. We supplied chainstores with clothing from China..I learnt alot, but it was soul destroying work making cheap watred down copies of trend clothing...designed to last a season. I feel liberated from that world now.
  • Michele: What are you reading at the moment?
  • Tarryn : "The Element" by Ken Robinson...read it for your childrens sake. It's all about the education system.
  • Michele: Favourite food?
  • Tarryn : I love food!!!Flat breads and curries at the moment..YUM!!!
  • Michele: Spoken like a passionate Durban girl...Favourite movie?
  • Tarryn : Baraka, mind blowing and beautiful , made in the nineties..unsurpassed.

This I love!!
